Pacific North West, into the mist
Oregon and Washington State unveil a beautiful coastline and vibrant cities, like avant-garde and bohemian Portland and innovative and attractive Seattle.
Bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Rocky Mountains on the east, this region is well-known for its natural beauty.
Inland there are a succession of grandiose natural parks, renowned vineyards, lakes and volcanic landscapes.
Washington State: The Evergreen State
Surrounded by the Pacific Coast, Canada, Idaho and Oregon, this is a beautiful state with grandiose landscapes.
You will encounter natural parks, a rugged coast battered by the swell of the Pacific and renowned vineyards.
A rich flora and fauna and of course a urban area in full creative swing: Seattle.
Seattle: « emerald city », full of vitality and creativity, ever-evolving food and beer scene, and innovative architecture. Make sure to visit: Pioneer Square District with its brick and cobbled alleys, have a Fish & Chips lunch in the picturesque Pike Place Market, make a trip to Alki Beach to admire the skyline, explore the district of Fremont, for its street art and its pretty shops. Let’s not forget those native iconic industries that are now world known such as Microsoft, Starbucks and Amazon.
Olympic National Park and Whidbey Island: An International Biosphere Reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The diversity of its ecosystems makes it a unique place. You will find glaciers, volcanic peaks and a temperate rain forest, thousand-year-old cedar trees and primitive coastal habitat.
This is a beautiful park, which offers both a mountainous and oceanic appearance, and is home to many endemic animal and plant species.
North Cascades or the American Alps: Bordering Canadian British Columbia, this park of some 2770 km² reveals some of the most spectacular alpine landscapes of the United States: deep valleys, hidden waterfalls, sparkling lakes, alpine meadows, glaciers.
For a trip into the wild, you will enter dense ancient forests, home to a diverse fauna including several endangered species, such as grizzly bears and pumas.
Mount Rainier National Park & Mount St Helens: Asleep for more than a century, Mount Rainier is the tallest volcano in the Cascade Range (4,392 m), and forms a majestic cone that presides over Seattle. Its summit is covered with nearly 90 km² of ice and snow, and its crater has 26 glaciers. This is a paradise for hikers, beautiful trails with stunning Alpine views, forests, torrents and streams where you will find salmons.
San Juan Islands: Between Washington State and Vancouver Island, north of Puget Sound, the peaceful San Juan Islands archipelago.
More than 700 islands and islets floating in the mist of the Pacific Ocean. Most of them are inhabited. The three main islands are: San Juan, Orcas and Lopez. Formerly a mountain range, the archipelago served as a hunting ground for the Indians before the settlers established farms and orchards. These islands offer peace and authentic charm. This is the ideal spot where to rest, hike, bike and watch orcas and other wild species.
Portland: An eclectic ambience and an avant-garde atmosphere environmentally, artistically and musically. Discover Portland on foot, shop at alternative and funky boutiques and above all enjoy the hyped food scene. Go from microbreweries to wine and cheese bars and of course try the world-famous VooDoo doughnuts.
Willamette Valley wine region: An influential wine producing region, dominated by Pinot Noir, due to its cool-climate, but also Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling.
Oregon Coast
Simply breathtaking, from rough shorelines, immense wild beaches and dunes, gray whales migrating from Alaska to Mexico.
Crater Lake National Park & Klamath Falls: Crater Lake is one of the most fascinating natural parks. Its pine forests occupy the center of an extinct volcano, offering a real playground for bears, elks or coyotes. With almost 600 m deep, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the country.
For hiking: more than 160 km of marked trails between forest and ridge paths.
Explore its natural wonder: beautiful coast line, sandy beaches and dunes, deep lakes, volcanoes, glaciers, Alpine mountains and amazing fauna and flora, this is the ideal spot if you like the great outdoors.
